"Under the Oaks" has become a significant cultural event, demonstrating Headland's commitment to both community engagement and downtown revitalization. Since its launch, this outdoor concert series has consistently attracted substantial attendance.

“It’s similar to the feel of a backyard party with friends, except there’s 3,000 people there,” explains Adrienne Wilkins, Executive Director for the Headland Area Chamber of Commerce. “People bring their lawn chairs and just enjoy the live music throughout the evening.” 🎶🪑

The performances feature a diverse range of artists, from local talent to established musicians, spanning various genres. Local businesses extend their operating hours, providing attendees with opportunities to explore downtown's offerings. 🛍️ Food trucks are brought in to help feed the large crowds, but Wilkins says she limits that number in order to not take away from the downtown and other local businesses.

The event fosters a sense of unity, as residents and visitors connect beneath the expansive oak canopy. 🌳🤝

Heart of Headland, a local nonprofit organization, initiated the effort to revitalize Headland's downtown area back in 2019. At that time, while the town square possessed inherent charm, vacant storefronts presented a challenge. Wilkins recognized the area's considerable potential.

“Community members expressed a desire for live music and activities within the square,” she recounts. “They sought an experience comparable to successful events in other neighboring cities.”

"Under the Oaks" emerged as a result, becoming a notable regional attraction.

“It is widely recognized within the area,” Wilkins observes. Event Chairman Langley Henderson states, “Our goal is to cultivate a welcoming, family-friendly environment where all attendees can enjoy a positive experience.” 🥳

Attendance has increased dramatically over the years, reflecting the event's popularity.

“Headland has a history of safety, and this event has added to the quality of life for all age groups,” Wilkins says. “Especially for teenagers, who now have a safe place to enjoy themselves.” 🧑‍🎤

One of the key objectives of "Under the Oaks" was to stimulate economic activity for local businesses. Wilkins emphasizes the transformative impact the event has had on the city.

“We have witnessed a significant shift from numerous vacant storefronts to a thriving downtown, with most of the remaining available spaces primarily being those undergoing renovation. It has demonstrated the viability of strategic downtown revitalization.”

“Under the Oaks" has transcended its initial purpose, evolving from a simple concert series into a vital engine for Headland's prosperity and community spirit. 💚 It stands as a testament to the power of collective vision and dedicated effort, proving that thoughtful revitalization can transform a town's landscape and cultivate a vibrant, inclusive gathering place for generations to come. 🌟
