Gotta Get to Gadsden
Downtown Gadsden is one of my favorite places in all of Alabama. It may be because of the people and how they have believed in what WEDO Media produces, or it could just be that it’s a fun place to spend a day. When we need a pick-me-up, my mom and I both know that we “gotta get to Gadsden.” The shops, the food, and just the overall feel of walking downtown lift our spirits. We love discovering new things and meeting the owners of the businesses, but this experience is something you can enjoy, too. There are lots of things to do in Gadsden, but shopping downtown is one of our favorites. To tell you more, we decided to share our recent trip with you!
🛍 A Stroll Through Gadsden’s Best Shops
The first stop is Alabama Gift Company, a store that feels like a love letter to the state. Shelves are stocked with locally made treasures—art, gourmet foods, candles, and handcrafted pottery, all sourced from Alabama artisans. Whether you’re looking for the perfect souvenir or a taste of Southern hospitality, this shop is a must-visit.
A few doors down, King’s Olive Oil invites you in with its warm, inviting aroma. Rows of stainless-steel fustis line the walls, each holding a different olive oil or balsamic vinegar, infused with flavors like garlic, basil, and even blood orange. The best part? You can sample them all, drizzling a little onto fresh bread to find your favorite. It’s a shop where food lovers can lose track of time, dreaming up new recipes to take home.
Next, Dusty Things is a delightful treasure trove for antique lovers. Walking through its doors is like stepping into the past—vintage furniture, old books, and one-of-a-kind finds fill the space. It’s the kind of store where you come in looking for one thing and leave with something unexpected but perfect.
For those searching for meaningful gifts, Laura Lee’s on Broad is the perfect stop. This charming boutique offers a collection of inspirational gifts with a faith-based touch. From beautifully designed religious keepsakes to the comforting scents of Sweet Grace candles, every item carries a message of encouragement and love. And for a sweet treat while you shop, don’t miss their selection of Frios Popsicles, a refreshing way to cool off on a warm day.
For those who love a little Western flair, 5 Branded Broncs is the place to go. This Western wear boutique carries everything from cowboy boots and hats to stylish apparel that blends rugged charm with modern trends. Whether you're looking for the perfect pair of jeans, a statement belt buckle, or a classic Stetson, this shop has the perfect touch of Southern grit and style.
The final stop is Grey Street & Co., a stylish boutique that blends classic and contemporary fashion. With carefully curated clothing, accessories, and gifts, it’s a favorite among shoppers looking for effortless style with a personal touch. Whether you’re searching for a statement piece or an everyday favorite, Grey Street & Co. makes sure every visit feels like a little fashion adventure.
🌳 A Morning of Adventure
Start your day with Noccalula Falls Park, where the 90-foot waterfall crashes into the Black Creek ravine, sending a fine mist into the morning air. A short walk along the trails offers breathtaking views of the falls, shaded pathways, and even a glimpse of historic sites like the Pioneer Village. If you're up for an adventure, the Black Creek Trail is a favorite among hikers and mountain bikers.
For those who prefer a more relaxed start, the James D. Martin Wildlife Park offers an easy stroll along wooden boardwalks stretching across the serene lake. It's a haven for birdwatchers, with herons and egrets often making an appearance.
🍽 A Midday Bite & A Cold Drink
Shopping bags in hand, it’s time for lunch, and The Rail Public House is a local favorite. Known for its gourmet burgers and Southern-inspired dishes, this casual spot is the perfect place to refuel. If you’re in the mood for something a little more laid-back, Blackstone Pub & Eatery is a great choice, offering brick-oven pizzas and a stellar craft beer selection.
🎨 Afternoon Fun: Arts, Culture, and the Coosa River
With the afternoon sun high in the sky, it’s time to explore Gadsden’s cultural side. The Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts is home to rotating art exhibits and the Imagination Place Children’s Museum, making it a great stop for families and art lovers alike. Just down the street, the Gadsden Museum of Art showcases both local and regional artists, giving visitors a glimpse into Alabama’s thriving art scene.
If you're visiting on the first Friday of the month, Broad Street transforms into a lively festival, featuring live music, street vendors, and plenty of good food. It’s a great way to experience Gadsden’s community spirit firsthand.
To close out the day, there’s no better place to unwind than by the Coosa River. Whether it’s fishing along the boardwalk, taking a sunset boat ride on Neely Henry Lake, or grabbing a local brew from Back Forty Beer Company, the riverfront is the perfect place to relax and soak in the beauty of Gadsden.
Gadsden Is Waiting for You
